Professor Michael Metzger has lectured at top business schools in Latin America, the United States, and Spain for the past 26 years. He has taught international marketing at the graduate and undergraduate levels in both Spanish and English.

Autism, Authenticity, and the Classroom

The late diagnosis of his daughter and family counseling led to the realization that Michael was, in all probability, on the autism spectrum as well. Michael was formally diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of 58.

Michael credits his autism for his creative and unconventional approaches to business education throughout his career, as well as his deeply authentic and genuine approach to his students and the classroom. He also now sees that the challenges he has faced, the unique way in which he processes information, sees, and experiences the world, are a result of his autism as well.

Ross School of Business and Community

Michael has built a successful career in business education and has found a welcoming academic home at the Ross School of Business. He hopes to use the remainder of his career to continue learning about himself, the intersection of autism and entrepreneurship, and dispel misunderstandings surrounding autism through sharing his experiences.

One surprising misunderstanding is that autistics feel intensely, care deeply, and almost desperately want to connect with others. Autistics, like everyone, want to experience community and find a place where they are valued and belong.
